American Idol – Top 8 Girls
Katie – 4 – “Break Away”: This song doesn’t have a lot of excitement to it. She’s handling the low key OK, although I would suggest she take it up to give it some energy. She’s singing it exactly like Kelly Clarkson… not a good idea because Kelly does it better. Ooh… some flat notes in there. And some more. This just has no life at all. It’s supposed to have a happy, waltz-like quality, being in 6/8 time. She’s dragging the song to a slow and untimely death.
Siobhan – 6 – “House of the Rising Sun”: Interesting start… accapella is risky in a live performance on a stage where the acoustics and overtones can pull you off pitch. When the band joined in, she was exactly in tune. Nice. She has a lot of power in her voice, which I really appreciate. I think the tempo is a little slow. I really enjoy listening to her voice. She’s gaining confidence after a couple of good weeks under her belt. I don’t like to call too many “dark horses” at this point, but she could be a spoiler.
Lacey – 5 – “The Story”: Her voice sounds so childish to me. I wish there was more substance to it. This is actually a good song choice for her, because it doesn’t require a big voice. It’s very melodic, so she can get by without the power. She has a decent range and can pop up to the falsetto easily. The whole performance is sort of sleepy, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The song is sort of easy-going, so she’s actually stylizing it quite well. I think she’s doing the best she can with the voice she has, which I realize is sort of a left-handed compliment.
Katelyn – 4 – “I Feel the Earth Move”: Her singing is OK, but the lyrics are not showing in her face. I think the keyboard is detracting from this performance. It barely looks like she’s even playing. If you just looked at her, you wouldn’t think the earth was moving under her feet. This is a very safe performance. There’s really nothing exciting about this at all. Her overtly emotional performance was almost absurd last week. She went a little overboard, but this is completely understated. It’s not bad… it’s just not that good.
Didi – 5 – “Rhiannon”: Her voice is very light and melodic. I would like it to have more body. At least she’s not singing flat this week. This is the Didi I remember from the auditions… the one I liked. This is such a mellow song, I thought it was going to be a snooze, but she’s actually giving it some life. It seems like she gave herself a pep talk or something because her confidence is up and the number of off pitch notes is down. A few interesting changes to the melody, but she’s not overdoing it.
Paige – 3 – “Smile”: Great song. I love to sing this one. Where is the passion? The lyrics of this song are gut-wrenching. She’s singing it like it’s about nothing… it’s so beige. I’m annoyed. The runs toward the middle and end are horrible. The arrangement is corny and bizarre. She’s trying too hard at the end to do something different. A classic like this really can be done straight. It doesn’t need embellishment! It just needs to be sung with power and feeling.
Crystal – 7 – “Give Me One Reason”: This is just about the perfect song choice for her. The first verse is a little tame. OK, now she’s getting into the second verse, and she’s putting her heart into it. She is very professional. For someone who’s only performed on street corners? Wow. She’s really working this out. She’s confident, unlike everyone else except perhaps Siobhan. She doesn’t seem intimidated by all of the fame and flash. She talks to Ryan like he’s a real person. He’s probably not accustomed to that. LOL
Lilly – 4 – “I Fall to Pieces”: This key is too low. She could hardly get down to the first note. Some flat notes, too. I think her vowel shapes are messing with her pitch. She’s being entirely too cutesy. I sort of want to slap her just a little. I don’t like this rendition. It’s too simplistic, and certainly an odd type of song for American Idol. This doesn’t even sound like the same Lilly from the past two weeks. The song is making her its own, instead of the other way around.
Ranking:
OK, Paige is gone. No doubt in my mind. The second one out is a little less obvious, but I think it will be Katelyn.

I just have to say, watching Ryan go down the row of guys saying their names like some sort of metrosexual drill sergeant was kind of creepy.
Lee - 5 – “Fireflies”: I’m not a fan of this song. Odd choice for his voice. It has too much melody and sweetness. He needs something with more powerful lines. The jumping melody is giving him fits with his pitch. I like that he’s giving it a little gravelly quality. It gives the song some depth instead of being a silly little happy sappy song about hugs from lightening bugs. (Those lyrics are like fingernails on a Styrofoam chalkboard.) I don’t think this was a good song choice, but he tried something new and at least he didn’t try to change his vocal style. I liked the simple ending.
Alex - 6 – “Trouble”: Good song choice for him. He’s looking a little more confident this week than he was before, but he still lacks star quality. His voice is sounding much better than I remember it, too. Good idea to have the guitar, since he moves like an almost semi-coordinated human. He has a sweet demeanor about him, which is endearing. I think I’ve called him “endearing” for three weeks now. Well done, overall, but again, not great.
Tim - 4 – “Hallelujah”: This is such a great song, and he’s not singing it badly, but I want so much more from it, from him. Where is his passion? Where’s the depth? He’s singing it more full voice than it should be. I want to see his heart ripping apart with angst. I should be feeling slightly emotional at this point, and I’m just not. If you heard KD Lang sing this at the opening ceremony of the recent Olympics, or even Jason Castro from a couple of seasons ago on Idol, you’d know what I’m looking for. This was fine, but I just expect more from someone on this song.
Andrew - 4 – “Genie in a Bottle”: OK, this may be one of the strangest song choices ever. I have to admit, I like the arrangement so far. Just him with the acoustic. It was OK with it until the chorus… It feels odd to have him singing these lyrics. They don’t fit him at all. This performance feels contrived. He really hasn’t had a fresh performance since “Straight Up” and he’s grasping at straws, trying to relive the moment. He needs to move forward. This was another giant step back.
Casey - 5 – “You’ll Think of Me”: Good song for him. I want more performance quality, mostly because I know he can do it. This isn’t a star performance so far. It’s just a guy sitting on a stool, strumming a guitar and singing well. It’s just kind of bland. Where did his appeal go? Toward the end, he’s giving it more heart and soul. I wish he’d done the whole thing with this kind of intensity and energy. I didn’t hear any goat boy vibrato, so maybe he has his nerves under control.
Aaron - 3 – “I’m Already There”: Yet another pet peeve of mine – story songs. He sounds terrified. His voice is actually quavering. I’m nervous for him. Pitch problems all over the place. When he stood up, he got a little livelier. But his pitch isn’t any better. This song is probably too big for him. He’s trying to put some grit into his voice, which doesn’t work for the type of singer he is, nor does it help the song.
Toddrick - 4 – “Somebody to Love”: I think he already found somebody to love when he looked in the mirror. Ugh. I hated that falsetto at the beginning. It wasn’t heartfelt at all. It’s just more showing off. His voice is good, but he doesn’t have the right attitude for the song. He’s smiling through it, which doesn’t reflect the lyrics. I can’t deny that his voice has power and he’s singing this pretty well. Maybe I’m just so soured to him that I can’t like him, but I’m not impressed.
Michael - 7 – “This Woman’s Work”: This is a great song. I wasn’t thrilled with the falsetto at the beginning, but at least it felt relevant to the song. He has so much stage presence and confidence. He’s really getting into the song and seems comfortable moving, going all over the stage. This is definitely the strongest performance of the night. He’s singing with a lot of passion, which draws people in. Powerful voice, and he knows how/when to let it out, but he can tame it, too. Great control. Nice blue note at the end.
Ranking:
This is tough because there were a whole bunch of decent, but extremely average performances. I suppose by process of elimination, I’m going to have to go with Aaron and Andrew: Aaron because he seemed very insecure and had the most pitch problems, and Andrew because I think he’s getting to be a broken record… a one-trick pony. I originally thought he’d make the Top 5, but tonight finally changed my mind. He needed to come up with something new and fresh, but he just keeps trying to revive his glory day and it’s getting tiresome.
Of course, once again I want Toddrick to be put out of my misery, but he probably sang too well this week for him to go home.
