Katie  – 4 – “Break Away”: This song doesn’t have a lot of excitement to it.  She’s handling the low key OK, although I would suggest she take it up to give it some energy.  She’s singing it exactly like Kelly Clarkson… not a good idea because Kelly does it better.  Ooh… some flat notes in there.  And some more.  This just has no life at all.  It’s supposed to have a happy, waltz-like quality, being in 6/8 time.  She’s dragging the song to a slow and untimely death.

Siobhan  – 6 – “House of the Rising Sun”: Interesting start… accapella is risky in a live performance on a stage where the acoustics and overtones can pull you off pitch.  When the band joined in, she was exactly in tune.  Nice.  She has a lot of power in her voice, which I really appreciate.  I think the tempo is a little slow.   I really enjoy listening to her voice.  She’s gaining confidence after a couple of good weeks under her belt.  I don’t like to call too many “dark horses” at this point, but she could be a spoiler.

Lacey  – 5 – “The Story”: Her voice sounds so childish to me.  I wish there was more substance to it.  This is actually a good song choice for her, because it doesn’t require a big voice.  It’s very melodic, so she can get by without the power.  She has a decent range and can pop up to the falsetto easily.  The whole performance is sort of sleepy, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  The song is sort of easy-going, so she’s actually stylizing it quite well.  I think she’s doing the best she can with the voice she has, which I realize is sort of a left-handed compliment.

Katelyn  – 4 – “I Feel the Earth Move”: Her singing is OK, but the lyrics are not showing in her face.  I think the keyboard is detracting from this performance.  It barely looks like she’s even playing.  If you just looked at her, you wouldn’t think the earth was moving under her feet.  This is a very safe performance.  There’s really nothing exciting about this at all.  Her overtly emotional performance was almost absurd last week.  She went a little overboard, but this is completely understated.  It’s not bad… it’s just not that good.

Didi  – 5 – “Rhiannon”: Her voice is very light and melodic.  I would like it to have more body.  At least she’s not singing flat this week.  This is the Didi I remember from the auditions… the one I liked.  This is such a mellow song, I thought it was going to be a snooze, but she’s actually giving it some life.  It seems like she gave herself a pep talk or something because her confidence is up and the number of off pitch notes is down.  A few interesting changes to the melody, but she’s not overdoing it.

Paige  – 3 – “Smile”: Great song.  I love to sing this one.  Where is the passion?  The lyrics of this song are gut-wrenching.  She’s singing it like it’s about nothing… it’s so beige.  I’m annoyed.  The runs toward the middle and end are horrible.  The arrangement is corny and bizarre.  She’s trying too hard at the end to do something different.  A classic like this really can be done straight.  It doesn’t need embellishment!  It just needs to be sung with power and feeling.

Crystal  – 7 – “Give Me One Reason”: This is just about the perfect song choice for her.  The first verse is a little tame.  OK, now she’s getting into the second verse, and she’s putting her heart into it.  She is very professional.  For someone who’s only performed on street corners?  Wow.  She’s really working this out.  She’s confident, unlike everyone else except perhaps Siobhan.  She doesn’t seem intimidated by all of the fame and flash.  She talks to Ryan like he’s a real person.  He’s probably not accustomed to that.  LOL

Lilly  – 4 – “I Fall to Pieces”: This key is too low.  She could hardly get down to the first note.  Some flat notes, too.  I think her vowel shapes are messing with her pitch.  She’s being entirely too cutesy.  I sort of want to slap her just a little.  I don’t like this rendition.  It’s too simplistic, and certainly an odd type of song for American Idol.  This doesn’t even sound like the same Lilly from the past two weeks.  The song is making her its own, instead of the other way around.

Ranking:

OK, Paige is gone.  No doubt in my mind.  The second one out is a little less obvious, but I think it will be Katelyn.
